Early morning on a sunny February 12 of this year, our busy household made a call to our trusted rider, Sammy, to ship some fresh supplies, but his phone went unanswered for quite some time. When he eventually reverted, he shocked us by relating to us that there had been great chaos in the market as the traders protested against an ugly incident whereby a man seeking to escape a life of hard drugs had been chopped into several pieces at around 7 pm the previous day as the police officers, and the public watched. The machete-wielding youths, having received strict orders from the local feared gang leader and chief supplier of heroin nicknamed Congo, had proceeded to mercilessly intercept the desperate soul who was attempting to leave the life of addiction to relocate to the nearby Riruta Ward. On hearing all these, we immediately got down to research and deep soul-searching. Were there hard drugs in this area, and what had triggered the menace? Who was the actual supplier behind this Congo man, and why was he still free and recruiting and dominating even more souls that are helpless?\u00a0 Why had the local administration been overpowered, and why had the ugly incident occurred right under their noses? Who were the elected leaders within this area? Most critically, what could be done to remedy this kind of situation? The answer to these questions forced us to go to the ground, stand on the exact spot where the merciless chopping took place, bow our heads in prayer, and then begin earnest survey work of mapping the area. Consequently, we systematically mapped the area by first knowing the community properly by profiling it demographically, ascertaining stakeholders, nurturing relationships, considering urgent needs, and finally identifying available assets and resources. The following work, therefore, is the initial report of what we mapped by following the five steps of community mapping, namely proper demographic profiling, key stakeholders identification, relationships building, needs assessment, and assets and resources identification as we sought to determine the community-led efforts to eradicate alcoholism in Dagoretti Market, in Mutuini Ward, Dagoretti South Constituency, in Nairobi County, Kenya. What did the demographic profile reveal beyond the fresh-smelling blood at the spot of the brutal crime?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

To better introduce ourselves to this community and better comprehend its overall nature and quality of daily life, we needed a good snapshot of its demography. We therefore captured the crime scene as shown in the video clip in clip 1.1 titled \u2018The Spot of the Merciless Gang Murder.mp4\u2019<\/em> in the addendum. According to Smith, Miriam and Suzanne Hurst (2008), this knowledge would help us to answer questions like population count, gender distribution matrix, marital status of its people, age distribution, living settings, main fiscal activities, average earnings, availability of basic amenities, dietary habits, common diseases, and physical blueprint of the community. How did we go about it?<\/p>

2.1\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Accurately Locating Mutuini on the Map<\/strong><\/h4>

2.1.1\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Specific Location<\/strong><\/h4>

Located within the Nairobi Metropolitan Region (NMR), in the Nairobi West District, in the Dagoretti Division of Nairobi County, Mutuini, from the data obtained Kenya National Bureau of Standards (KNBS). (2010), sits in the region of 250 hectares or 3.28 km2 and lies roughly 1\u00ba18’0″ of the equator\u2019s south and 36\u00ba42’0″ of the Prime Meridian\u2019s East. Taken in meters above sea level, Mutuini’s altitude varies between 1600 and 1850, according to Mutillah, W. (2003). Therefore, roughly 13 km or 8.1 miles West of the Nairobi CBD, one will easily find Mutuini, according to Kamau, H.W. (2015). Figure 1.1 in the addendum shows the map of Nairobi County showing the divisions.<\/p>

2.2\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Features of the Surrounding Areas<\/strong><\/h4>

Located in Nairobi’s western side, Mutuini consists of a rugged topography and occupies an elevation of roughly 1700-1800 m above sea level. Its immediate surroundings are the hilly slopes of the Mutuini River, where the Kenya Forest Service Recreational dam is located, and the Dagoretti and Ngong forests. Sharing the same name, Mutuini has two other sub-locations called Kirigu, and within Kirigu, there is the Mutuini Township and the Mutuini farms. To the west, there is the Thogoto location, while to the North is the Ruthimitu location, still also in the Dagoretti district. The east is the Waithaka location, while to the south is the Karen\/Langata division. Notably, the smooth Southern Bypass cuts across these busy communities. Figure 1.2 in the addendum shows Mutuini within the context of the Dagoretti Division<\/p>

2.3\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Physical and Natural Resources<\/strong><\/h4>

Since it borders forests and wetlands, forests like the Dagoretti and Ngong, including the Ondiri swamp, Mutuini is, therefore, well endowed with delicate natural landscapes and assets. This is why Oyake, L., Njenga, B., & Koech, M. (2003) argue that if the residents commit to farm agriculture, there will be no poverty in the area. What of the climate?<\/p>

2.4\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>The Climate Characteristics<\/strong><\/h4>

The climatic conditions in Mutuini are the same semi-tropical ones experienced within Nairobi. The rainy seasons are two beginning around the month of November to the month of December with the longer one extending from the month of March to the month of May, leading to an regular yearly rainfall of around 1,750 mm. Approximating 20 degrees centigrade, the air temperatures are mostly constant yearly, with a mean day-to-day temperature ranging between 12\u00b0C-26\u00b0C. Predictably, it is usually dry and cold around July\/August but hot and dry around January\/February. How is the leadership and governance structure?<\/p>

2.5\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Leadership and Governance<\/strong><\/h4>

Since it falls under Nairobi County, Mutuini, therefore, receives amenities such as refuse collection, primary education, health, water and sanitation, and fire protection, and so forth, from the County government. A quick survey of its infrastructure unfortunately reveals that there is gross inadequate provision of the core services within the area leading to great suffering by the residents. The current area Member of Parliament is Hon. John Kiarie (KJ), while the Mutuini Ward County Assembly Member of the County Assembly is Hon. Anthony Kiragu. How is the population?<\/p>

2.6\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>The Population Growth<\/strong><\/h4>

Kamau reveals that the great population surge due to recent net migration into Mutuini has greatly affected water consumption, solid-waste-generation rates, and land-use patterns, leading to great suffering. This has led to a painful spectacle of daytime migration of the residents from the area who go back and forth day-to-day into Nairobi’s CBD for purposes of education, trade, and employment. Unless a proper developmental policy strategy is introduced, this strange daily diurnal migration will persist. The current population density of this area, according to KNBS. (2019) is 8785.5 people per square Kilometer. What of education?<\/p>

2.7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>The Education<\/strong><\/h4>

Mutuini boasts of four public primary schools, namely Mutuini, Kirigu, Gitiba, and Dr. Muthiora. Unfortunately, Kiumi, J., Kibe, S., & Nganga, S. (2013) reveal that there is a disproportionate 40:1 pupil-teacher ratio (PTR). Other schools include the Catholic-based Mutuini Educational Centre together with Waithaka School for the Mentally Handicapped. Mutuini High School is the only secondary school that has often tended to perform poorly in the national examinations over the past years since its founding in 1969. What is the age structure like?<\/p>

2.8\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>The Age Structure<\/strong><\/h4>

Kenya National Bureau of Standards (KNBS) records prove that Mutuini’s population is youthful, with 21% of it being children under 15 years old. This leads to high dependency ratios, which in turn leads to high joblessness rates and accentuate the demand for health, transport, education, housing, and other social services. What of the female-male population or sex ratio? Figure 1.3 in the addendum shows the population statistics of Mutuini Location. Having exhaustively undertaken this profiling exercise, what next step followed in the mapping exercise?<\/p>

3.\u00a0<\/strong>#2nd step of mapping<\/em> ~ Systematically Identifying the Key Stakeholders within Mutuini <\/strong><\/h4>

When our feet recovered after stepping on the bloodstained ground, we needed to talk with other persons of interest beyond Sammy, the rider. Therefore, we began scouting for the leading patrons within the Dagoretti Market. This led us to four key people whose clout was bound to positively or negatively influence the projected change process at hand. The following were the emerging candidates in the vast pool:<\/p>

3.1\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Meeting the Patrons of the Dagoretti Market<\/strong><\/h4>
  1. Anne, the Owner and Operator of Purefresh Water Dispenser<\/em><\/li>
  2. Alex, the Transport Manager within the Dagoretti Market Stage<\/em><\/li>
  3. Njambi, the Operator of Betpalace<\/em><\/li>
  4. Tony Njuguna, the Brilliant Mechanic<\/em><\/li>
  5. Sammy, the Motorcycle (Boda Boda) Rider<\/em><\/li><\/ol>

    How did we get our feet past their doors?<\/p>

    4.\u00a0<\/strong>#3rd step of mapping<\/em> ~ Systematically Building Relationships with the Key Stakeholders within Mutuini <\/strong><\/h4>

    Initially, the above patrons were only known by name and socioeconomic concern or hierarchy that took them to the marketplace. Therefore, seeing that each of these relationships held a possibility to witness and even eventually impact the project, we made some fire and began chatting intentionally. Surprisingly, as we kept the conversations and engagements alive, we soon discovered that these folks had more going on above their necks and beneath their chest than their daily toil easily revealed. We will highlight a few interesting revelations that emerged:<\/p>

    4.1\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong>Stakeholder Mapping the Patrons of the Dagoretti Market ~ Justifying why the Patrons Form the Team<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>
    1. Anne, the Owner and Operator of Purefresh Water Dispenser<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ol>

      As a passionate sociopreneur, Anne intentionally and strategically positioned her water-vending premise at the crossroads leading to the largest alcohol den in the hope to convince as many revellers to take water and not wine! She even went as far as to mount a rudimentary roadblock leading to the alcohol den (manned at her expense by a zealous operator) in hopes of reducing the traffic to sin and directing it to her pure business. Unfortunately, so far, she has rarely had any victories, but she was determined not to give up. We were thus on the ground to partner with her! Sensing a potential community transformation at hand, she boldly held our hands at the first visit, quickly summoned the leading patrons within the community, and set our engines on fire. Going forward, this was promising to be a priceless transformational co-labourer!<\/p>

      1. Alex, the Transport Manager within the Dagoretti Market Stage<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ol>

        When the initially proposed group disagreed on the way to interview due to competing interests and priorities, Alex singularly dismantled the gathering and shifted the goalpost to a new field. This is how we ended up meeting the prolific Tony, who instantly became the group’s spokesman ever since, with Alex now playing the supporting role. On a personal note, he privately confided in the personal challenges that he was battling with, and we began scouting for solutions so that as he sought to help his community, he would not be muzzled but would instead get to eat the grain under his swift feet! It was a win-win proposition for him. What an exciting friend!<\/p>

        1. Njambi, the Operator of Betpalace<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ol>

          As a single mother with a significant burden on her shoulders, Njambi took over two hours at the detriment of her business to give us an in-depth history and analysis of the area and what she feels is the big play at stake. She was a broken woman fighting to see her teenage children away from the filthy premises, as she called it, having seen what had happened to her peers’ children. Notably, most of the group’s unanimous narrative came from her mature mouth.<\/p>

          1. Tony Njuguna, the Brilliant Mechanic<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ol>

            With few investments and an ancestral village worth fighting for, Tony immediately became the undisputed spokesman and leader due to his innate intelligence and passion. A passionate family man who loved his wife and children dearly, Tony readily testified about the fall from grace of his ancestors and how his wife had selflessly delivered him from the reproach of poverty through her ingenuity and thrift. He wanted to see other young men (some who listened on sheepishly as he spoke) enjoy the same blessing of a second chance at life with a supportive family at the side. He dominated the interviews and helped the group to advance their conversation constructively. Clip 1.2 in the addendum briefly captures Tony sharing more about the profile of Mutuini.<\/p>

            1. Sammy, the Motorcycle (Boda Boda) Rider<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ol>

              As a dear service provider for the three years, Sammy became the bridge to introduce us to his people seeing that he is a native of the area with all his ancestors having lived and died around there. He knew the who, the what, the where, and most importantly, the why of the project. What need did these patrons eventually identify within their community?<\/p>

              5.\u00a0<\/strong>#4th step of mapping<\/em> ~ Systematically Conducting a Needs Assessment with the Key Stakeholders within Mutuini <\/strong><\/h4>

              With the passionate stakeholders on site, it readily became easy to pinpoint the community’s needs and their desired attendant changes as we converse easily. From the onset, we assured them that we were not there to give them solutions but rather to facilitate and guide the conversation among them so that they could identify and eventually roll out their homegrown solutions. Further, we reminded them that though they were free to speak freely, they were, however, to zero in on what was most important. This was the best way to enable them to directly express their sentiments about the need they most cared about within their community. What did they eventually agree about as their greatest community need?<\/p>

              5.1\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Alcoholism ~ The Wicked Serpent that Must Leave the Garden Immediately!<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>

              After a lengthy historical narration about their community and their painful personal tales, the verdict was out: Alcoholism was the elephant in the room. It was the community’s Achilles heel and the original sin that had to be dealt with. What about the hard drugs? We impatiently asked as we remembered the poor soul who had been butchered mercilessly as he sought to escape the curse of hard drugs.<\/p>

              Njambi and Anne immediately responded with profound insight that alcohol was the starting point for all who eventually ended up on the hard drugs as they sought deeper waters. The rest of the group unanimously agreed with this angle of reasoning. Consequently, they affirmed that if the head of this snake could be cut off in infancy, the uncontrollable monster of hard drugs would die a natural death. What of insecurity, we again asked. They argued in the same way that the thirst for the bottle was still the main reason why there was rampant insecurity, as the thirsty always did everything within their power to rush and water the dry throats at any cost. Therefore, the same head of the wicked snake needed to be cut out. Did the official report agree or disagree with them?<\/p>

              5.2\u00a0<\/strong>Fact-Checking the Claims of Alcoholism in Mutuini<\/strong><\/h4>

              Anyanzwa, B. (2021) writes that 25% of Dagoretti South Sub-County in Nairobi County, under which Mutuini falls, is severely affected by drug abuse, according to NACADA’s survey. Sadly, this is the highest in the entire country, with Kibera and Mathare following at 23% and 22% respectively. Who are the most affected by this scourge? It is the children and the youths between 15-24 bearing the greatest brunt of this curse. Which is the primary abused hard drug? Well, it is heroin mostly being abused in Mutuini, according to the NACADA report. So, were the stakeholders right in their claim that alcoholism was the greatest need within their community? Yes, according to the official records, they were right! What ability can the community then jointly wield to try to solve this scourge?<\/p>

              6\u00a0<\/strong>#5th step of mapping<\/em> ~ Systematically Identifying the Assets or Resources within Mutuini <\/strong><\/h4>

              Having conducted a needs assessment of the community’s problems, needs, or challenges, the next burden was to identify its key assets and resources. This was done by ascertaining the positive contributions that the community and its members can make to the development process. So, what was this most vital resource that the community had, the group asked as they looked hopelessly at their rundown shopping center.<\/p>

              6.1\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>i. Helping the Poor to See their Riches and Wealth<\/strong><\/h4>

              6.1.1\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>a. The Divine Gifts and Skills<\/strong><\/h4>

              We had to lovingly and patiently assure them that the most excellent resource that they had as the Mutuini community was and will always be the people. This is because the Mutuini community had people with gifts and skills, some of which were already evident within the small group. Right there, there were planners, orators, mobilizers, counselors, skilled evaluators, etc. Therefore, despite its demographic limitations as a low-income and low-middle-class community, they were divinely gifted to solve their local problems.<\/p>

              6.1.2\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>b. The Great Physical Resources <\/strong><\/h4>

              Further, we reminded them that Mutuini had great physical resources, such as arable land, physical structures, reliable water sources, and foliage. Therefore, using these readily existing physical resources, much could be done to better this community.<\/p>

              6.1.3\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>c. The Community Resources<\/strong><\/h4>

              Apart from the natural resources, we reminded the attentive community that they additionally had community resources such as services or agencies within their reach. These included community programs, nongovernmental organizations, or other church-based programs that offer particular services of relevance. To this, they were quick to ask what we were bringing as outsiders as they geared to battle!<\/p>

              6.2\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>ii. The Forbidden Place of the Outsider<\/strong><\/h4>

              To help the Mutuini stakeholders see the difference between other forms of development and transformational community development, we had to patiently explain to them that the key aim of transformational community development is to guide the community to internalize their journey of development by digging within rather than exporting without. This is because when the outside funding becomes too much, it might create dependency by suppressing local initiatives. Therefore, since the project at hand was directly meant to help the community identify and rectify their problem (namely alcoholism), the community was supposed to be ready to commit themselves to full participation instead of looking outwards to strangers. How were they to talk with each other to draw internal solutions?<\/p>

              6.3\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>iii. Internal Dialogues to Help Identify Assets<\/strong><\/h4>

              Having moved from needs assessment, where they had obsessed with the unworkable community challenges, it was now time for the community to positively move to identify the ready assets within by thinking about what works, what has succeeded, and what positive impact those elements can bring in the future. How then to identify these assets, the community leaders eagerly asked.<\/p>

              Relying on the wisdom shared by Mbede, P. (2025b), we patiently dialogued with the Mutuini community around the following five key questions, which, as they answered, formed the next asset base around which we would anchor the next phase of the project. What were the leading dialogue questions?<\/p>

              1. The community’s Value ~ What do you value most about your community? <\/em>The responders affirmed unity as their greatest value as a community.<\/li>
              2. The community’s Key History ~ What is a “high point” in your community’s history?<\/em> They revealed that being the locality that had once hosted the nation\u2019s founding father during his precolonial struggle was their highest historical point.<\/li><\/ol>

                III. The community’s Generational Legacy ~ What do you want your community to pass on to future generations? <\/em>They zealously pontificated that they looked forward to leaving a pious and prosperous generation behind them.<\/p>

                1. The community’s Image ~ What Image of your community do you want to promote?<\/em> They stated that they wanted to promote an image of a progressive cosmopolitan society which is inclusive to all.<\/li>
                2. The community’s Traditions ~ What traditions do you value most?<\/em> They value a godly tradition where the elders are respected and the women and children are protected.<\/li><\/ol>

                  7.\u00a0<\/strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h4>

                  As we drove away from Mutuini, we left with more than a map ~ we had a community with real people and real hopes and dreams for a better community. Though the bloodshed was still fresh in the wider consciousness of the people, a small group was, however, determined to rise as the onyx and to turn the battle for the community’s future at the gates. However, they had to systematically work together with one another by following the five key steps of mapping. They could only achieve this by adequately knowing the community by profiling it demographically, ascertaining stakeholders, nurturing relationships, considering urgent needs, and finally identifying available assets and resources. What recommendations followed as we folded home in preparation for the next stage of the project?<\/p>

                  8.\u00a0<\/strong>Recommendations <\/strong><\/h4>

                  As we left Dagoretti Market that evening after a long day of directly engaging with the people on the ground, several actionable steps emerged that promised to address the findings contained in the live report that was poised to help the new emerging team. Below is the highlight of what was observed and proposed:<\/p>

This is because we had held the entire meeting standing outside in the sun in a heavily polluted bus terminus! This had to change forthwith!<\/p>

                  2#proposal<\/em><\/strong>: A better means of communication ~ <\/strong>Since we were now good acquaintances, it was prudent to make use of media and communications technology to conduct some aspects of future meetings. This would save both time and money while affording the leaders time to better produce within their various labor fronts.<\/p>

                  3#proposal:<\/em> A robust outreach and recruitment of more experts ~ <\/strong>While the passion of most of the leaders was admirable and palpable, it was, however, prudent to recruit more able hands to help with the upcoming assignments of the project. This is because some aspects of the phases ahead were going to be quite technical, requiring specialized skills. Therefore, we needed to preempt the need and promptly meet it strategically.<\/p>
